There are many new stories that I enjoy reading ☺️. Among them, my favourite new story is "Beddegama" ❤️. Beddegama can be described as a translation of "The Village in the Jungle" by Leonard Wolfe ✍️. The translator here is A.P. Gunaratne. This is a leading novel in Sri Lankan literature. Based in a remote village in the Hambantota district, it depicts the harshness and poverty of village life 🏞️.

The main character of the story, Silindu, is a person who loves the forest very much but is an outcast from society. The emotional parts of the story revolve around his daughters, Punchi Menika and Hinnihami. The main characters who destroy their lives are the village's Arachchila and the scheming Fernando.

The speciality of this novel is that it does not exaggerate village life. It shows the devastation caused by hunger, fear of disease and ignorance. In the end, the entire village is sacrificed to the forest, which creates a major shock in the reader.

Baddegama is not just a story but a mirror that shows the impermanence of human life. It became so popular among Sinhala readers that it was later even made into an award-winning film. πŸŽ–
